Native Los Angelina and self-taught artist, Carol Es, uses past experience as the fuel for subject matter in this intimate exploration of childhood biology.
Es' work is a daily narrative that uses a variety of ink stamping, pencils and pen on hand-cut, manila-colored industrial pattern paper with sewing pins. These materials come about from a life growing up in the garment business with her family. She transfoms a broken past of personal experiences directly into her work - each piece a powerful slice of private therapy, honesty, and dark, childlike humor.
Carol is a recent recipient of a grant from the Durfee Foundation in southern Califorina. She has exhibited at the Riverside and Torrance Art Museums. A copy her first handmade Artists' book titled, 1-SELF is part of the UCLA Special Collections, the Arthur and Mata Jaffe Collection at Florida Atlantic University, and the Getty Museum’s permanent collection.
