Welcome to Club Seal

This is my little clubhouse where I seal birch wood panels in the blazing sun.

What did you think I did here?

I’m in the middle of finishing up sealing 13 panels, in both small and medium sizes, and I’m doing them all at once so I don’t have to do them one at a time as I feel like making art on them. I want to be able to just grab them and work on them right away.

At this very moment, I am waiting for the last 15 minutes to pass so I can go out there (I say “out there” because I am “in here,”  in the office where I keep my computer) and block-sand the first coat of the last five small ones. i will also apply a quick second coat. Then I will wait an hour before I go out there to sand and apply the last coats to all of them.

And that’s it! I’ll be done. I LOVE this stuff! I want to marry it. It takes just three coats: two light sands in between and that’s all! Beautiful! If only I knew about it a million years ago, who knows what I could have been painting all this time? Whelp, I’ll never know. Now we shall see what I do with it, right? No pressure.

Now I say two light sands, but maybe you read on the Exodus Project blog about how I was sanding with my palm sander all day the other day. That was because I was getting rid of the old sealer. I may have been wasting my time, but I really didn’t think this stuff would go on top of it since the old sealer was oil based. I didn’t want to risk any crackling, so I sanded it off. Just an extra day of labor. Oh well. Better safe than sorry.

Okay, I better go put those sealer coats on out there. I’ll be right back…

I’m back. Isn’t that weird how that was 40 minutes for me, but only a split second for you? I mean, depending on fast you read.

It’s a crazy assembly line going on today:

Plus, I’m still dicking with this painting that I started eons ago (it seems). You can kind of see where it’s going now though. The composition comes from the drawing I happened to make inside of Stephen Hines‘ copy of Carol Es une Monographie de Lignes.

Also, while I was out there in the studio, today’s Club Seal, I also sanded and put the final coats on the other eight.  So they are DONE! Woohoo! I was gone for a while actually.

Now it’s 4:20. You know what that means my friends. Ha! For me, it means what most of you think it means, but it’s slightly different for me, so I’ll be right back – then I’m heading outside again to check on that last coat, because as soon as those last five panels are dry, I’m going to give them a light sand and throw on the last coat as soon as I possibly can. Why? Because I want to be done with them!

So I’ll be right back again.

I’m back again, but now it’s after midnight because not only did I totally finish all of the panels and cleaned up, but I then had to shower and take off to my kabbalah class at Temple Beth Israel. It was a particularly great class tonight too, where we talked about the Tzimtzum. I love this stuff! It aligns with what I have always felt to be true about how the universe became. It’s something I felt since I was a very young child as a matter of fact.

Anyway. Good class tonight, as I said.

I got home around 10:00 and made some food and watched a little TV. Now I’m so tired I can hardly keep my eyes open, but I am thinking about tomorrow and how much I want to get started on the new pieces. I just hope there are enough hours in the day…

Oh! And by the way, please excuse my new blog that is currently under construction. It is in the middle of getting a new, streamlined look. It’s not quite there all the way yet, but it’s close. This is the basic layout now – just the one column. It’s better for smaller devices and cellular telephones. The only thing that is changing will be the top header area. I’m giving it a little more personality. Just as soon as I am able. Stay tuned! 🙂

Wow! 1:17. Time for bed all right. Sheesh.

And what am I the news? I keep telling you guys what time it is.

It is 9:47 a.m. here, but I’m in Maine on vacation. At home in Nova Scotia it is 10:47. Well, 10:48 now, because it’s slow typing on this tablet. Up next is Pat with the weather.

    Good blog post

    Thank you Lillian and Stephen.

Stephen, I didn’t know you were on vacation. I guess I somewhat ruined your book surprise. 🙁 …How is Maine? I bet there’s been humidity there too. Today we are having 76% humidity in Los Angeles. It must be some kind of record for this place. It’s really unheard of.
